Traveling to Tijuana, Part 1

Mexico and Dental Tourism

You might be one of the millions of Americans who are finding it harder and harder to afford basic needs, such as proper healthcare. Dental care is becoming more and more unreachable for “ordinary” citizens of the United States, thanks to the rising overhead costs that dentists and clinic owners have to, unfortunately, pass on to their patients.

Dental tourism is a niche in the market that offers patients an alternative to their local dental care providers. One of the leading destinations in the field of dental tourism is Tijuana, a Mexican city famed for its breathtaking beaches, and these days, also for its low-cost yet high-quality dental care.

Located in the Baja California Peninsula, Tijuana is one of the major financial and industrial hubs of Mexico. This global city is one of the most visited border cities in the world, thanks to its proximity to San Diego in California. It is estimated that more than 50 million cross the border between Tijuana and San Diego, with a significant amount of that number traversing the border from the United States for more affordable yet highly competitive dental healthcare.

Dental care in Tijuana
One of the things that draw millions of people to Tijuana is dental tourism. As prices rise on the other side of the border, more and more people flock to Tijuana to get high-quality dental care from highly qualified dentists at a lower price. The savings are astonishing—patients from the United States have reported that they have saved $10,000 to $15,000 on extensive dental procedures in Tijuana, Mexico.

The significant savings, of course, does not mean that the dental care that Mexican dental clinics offer is inferior. The overhead costs are significantly lower in Mexico, which allows highly qualified dental professionals to offer their expertise and services for lower prices. The dental clinics in Mexico are also modern and use state-of-the-art equipment to provide their patients with excellent dental care.

How do I get to Tijuana?
Traveling to Tijuana is very convenient and inexpensive. If you are in California (or a neighboring state), you can easily drive through the border and be in Tijuana in an hour or so. Parking lots for visiting dental tourists are also very common in Tijuana—you should be able to find one easily after you have crossed the border. However, if you are from the other side of the country, you can always fly in to San Diego and hop on the Tijuana Trolley (found at the San Diego Train Station). This trolley offers trips to Tijuana and back at a low cost, and has regular trips. Shuttle services and taxi cabs are also found in the border, with the drivers speaking good English to assist patients coming in fro the United States.

Some dental care providers, including us, offer a shuttle service that would pick patients up from the airport and take them back after their procedures or treatments. This is the most efficient and convenient option, since you will be taken directly to the clinic and back to the airport.
